5G’s coming home! EE and BT Sport showcase first live broadcast over 5G at Wembley

20 February 2019

Wembley Stadium has played home to some iconic moments since it opened in 2007. 2018 marked another milestone, as EE and BT Sport demonstrated the world’s first live broadcast with remote production over 5G for the EE Wembley Cup Final.

It’s an approach BT Sport will use to increase the coverage available to viewers with more matches and faster highlights.

The EE Wembley Cup Final goes worldwide

Rebel FC and F2 FC took to the pitch under Wembley’s famous arch for a cup final broadcast to the world over 5G via Spencer Owen’s (Hashtag United) YouTube channel.

The match saw some of YouTube’s best players battle it out, with the help of some football legends, to take the EE Wembley Cup home. Rebel FC played with Chelsea and Ghana legend Michael Essien in midfield, and France’s World Cup and European Championship winner David Trezeguet scored the winning goal in F2 FC’s 1-0 victory.

Broadcasting done differently

In the build-up to the event, EE and BT Sport partnered to showcase the capability by delivering a live, two-way broadcast from Wembley Stadium to London’s ExCeL Exhibition Centre, hosted by BT Sport presenters Matt Smith and Abi Stephens.

The broadcast was carried over 5G in Wembley Stadium and then produced remotely by the production crew at BT Sport’s base in Stratford, East London.

The event showcased how 5G will enable broadcasters to cover more live matches from more competitions, and bring game highlights closer to the final whistle than has previously been possible in the UK.

Adding 5G to EE’s award-winning 4G network will increase reliability and speeds in the UK’s busiest areas, such as Wembley Stadium, enabling fans to stay connected wherever they are. To be the first to hear about 5G and the latest devices on EE, register your interest now.
