Google has just unveiled two new phones at its annual developers’ conference, Google I/O.
The Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL are designed with everything you love about Google built in. And all for an affordable price.
So, what’s Google got in store for us this time around?
A camera that lights the way
Pixel phones have always found fans in the world of photography. Put simply, they produce stunning images – combining the power of the lens with brilliant built-in artificial intelligence technology to ramp up the quality of your photos and give them some real wow-factor.
Google is ideally placed to push the boundaries of photography thanks to the wealth of images it has to draw upon from within its search engine. Pixel phones understand what looks good and how different settings and environments can affect your photos.
Low-light shots are often the most difficult images to capture using your smartphone. The sensor needs to pull in lots of light to reveal all the detail in your photo, but that also means you’ll have to stay super-steady for an extended period of time to avoid getting shaky and grainy results.
But with the Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL's Night Sight feature, there’s no need for a flash or a tripod. You can achieve fantastic low-light photos simply by holding your phone steady – producing night-time shots that look as impressive and dramatic as your daytime ones.
Before you’ve even pressed the shutter the Pixel 3a's Night Sight springs into action, calculating everything from the levels of movement in the frame to the how much light it has to work with. Then your Pixel 3a or 3a XL will decide how many separate shots to take and how long the exposure is for each individual frame. Once all the frames are captured, your Pixel rolls them into one overall photo – combining all the elements of each individual shot for the best quality and lighting.
HDR+ works the same way, combining the best bits from a burst of photos to increase the dynamic range, bringing out all the details and making colours look rich and vivid. Give it a go in bright settings where sunlight could wash out the colour and details from your photos.
The Pixel 3a and 3a XL also feature Portrait Mode, which helps you take beautiful people photos with artistically blurred backgrounds. And if you’re more of a pet person, Motion Auto Focus will keep your photos looking sharp and in focus even if your dog won’t stop wagging its tail or your cat is keen to keep moving.
Voice of the people
With Google Assistant at the heart of the Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL, using your phone for everyday tasks and to quickly get hold of information is easier than ever. Just give your phone a squeeze or say “Hey Google”. Send a text, perform a Google search, select a song or get the day’s latest news – all in an instant. It’s the perfect companion to your Google Home Hub too, which assists you at home and works hand-in-hand with other smart home devices, such as security cameras, thermostats and Chromecast.
Further features on the new Pixel 3a and 3a XL include unlimited online storage for your high-quality images and videos on Google Photos, an Adaptive Battery which learns the apps you use most and reduces the power taken up by the apps you rarely open, and a custom-made Titan M security chip that updates automatically and offers an extra level of protection for important information such as passwords.
