It’s not just the outside of the new Galaxy S10 that’s been redesigned; the user-interface has been given a makeover too, making this the easiest, most user-friendly Galaxy smartphone ever.
It’s called One UI and runs on top of the Android Pie operating system. The main benefit of this new-look approach is that it makes it super-simple to navigate and control your smartphone.
A clean and uncluttered look
One UI has a clear and uncluttered design – apps and icons appear larger and easier to find. Menus are bold and simple to see, and everything is within easy reach. Plus, Bixby Home brings your most-used apps and relevant information to the forefront of your smartphone experience.
Simply unlock your phone and scroll to the left to see personalised content compiled by Bixby, including social updates, recent photos and videos you’ve received, the latest news, weather forecasts and calendar events.
Designed for large screens
Smartphones with a 6-inch-plus display used to be a bit of a rarity, but they’ve become so popular that a new way of navigating these large screens is needed. Holding a large phone with one hand while trying to press buttons or scroll through screens with your thumb can prove tricky, so Samsung has designed One UI to make things easier.
Everything you interact with or you’re likely to press is now placed in the bottom half of the screen, while items you’re most likely to just view are displayed in the top half.
Now, if your reading text messages or notifications from contacts, you’ll see these in the bottom half of the screen. No thumb-stretching required – everything is within easy reach. This new approach also affects the way you take photos and record videos – all the main options now appear at the bottom of the screen, rather than the top, making it quick and easy to adjust your most-used settings before pressing the shutter button.
New gesture controls
There are no physical buttons on the front of the Galaxy S10, so everything is controlled using simple swipes, gestures and navigation icons.
The navigation icons along the bottom of the display take you to your home screen, back to the previous screen, and call up all your open apps. Now with your apps and webpages, you can quickly flick through each screen you have open and swipe up to close each individual window.
The ‘Motions and gestures’ controls can be found under your phone’s settings and lets you easily perform everyday tasks with different gestures. For example, you can mute calls simply by turning your phone face down and swipe your hand across the display to take a screenshot.
Go easy on your eyes before bedtime
A new Night mode dims your screen and darkens your apps to take some of the strain off your eyes when viewing your phone in the evening or while curled up in bed. It’s takes some of the strain off your battery too, so if you want to conserve power, switching to Night mode during the day might help.
