In 2019 we launched the UK’s first 5G network, bringing our customers a superfast and even more reliable mobile experience whether browsing the web, gaming or streaming movies on the move.
Our 5G is now available in over 70 cities and large towns and we’re growing all the time.
Of course, we understand that with every new generation of new mobile technology people want to know if it’s safe, especially as there’s been a lot of rumours and misinformation spread online.
The truth is that the strong consensus among experts is that no health risks have been established. These are the facts:
Will 5G harm my health?
5G will not harm your health. We’ve seen the rumours and read the incorrect information online saying that 5G is linked to cancer and Covid-19 – it’s not true and has been rubbished by all the experts.
The fact is that 5G uses the same group of radio waves and technologies that have been used for decades. With over 25 years of research, the World Health Organisation and Ofcom have found no health risks.
Can 5G cause cancer?
In the UK, the radio waves used for 5G are even lower, with less power, than the WiFi routers in most houses.
The radio waves used for mobile networks and WiFi are ‘non-ionizing’, which means they cannot change or harm the DNA structure of a cell, and do not cause cells to become cancerous.
What’s the difference between ionizing and non-ionizing waves?
Ionizing waves include alpha rays, beta rays and gamma rays. They can change the structure of a cell and potentially cause illness.
Non-ionizing waves carry mobile signals and can’t change the structure of a cell. 5G uses non-ionizing waves – that can’t make you ill.
Which type of radio frequencies does 5G use?
A lot of the misinformation online comes from the misunderstanding that 5G is a millimetre wave or mmWave technology – this isn’t true. And it’s not a military technology either.
5G networks in the UK in 2020 use spectrum in the 3.4-3.8GHz band, and at 700MHz – similar to digital television signals. Our network currently uses the 3.4GHz spectrum – similar to our 4G, 3G and 2G services, which operate on radio spectrum between 800MHz and 2.6GHz.
Will 5G harm wildlife?
5G uses radio frequencies that have been in use for decades, with no effect on health. There is no evidence to suggest the birds, bees or any other wildlife is affected by 5G.
What’s more, 5G is being added to many of our existing sites instead of new ones – so there’s minimal impact on the environment.
