The best mobile tech for university students

10 September 2018

If you’re leaving home and heading off to uni this autumn, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got all your essentials sorted. While your parents might regard "essentials" as a crate of food and some washing-up liquid, we’re sure you’ve got other ideas – mainly which tech you’re going to need to see you through the academic year.

The latest and greatest smartphones

A decent smartphone is a uni must-have – whether it’s for Skyping friends and family back home or capturing those epic student parties on Instagram or Snapchat.

At the premium end of the spectrum, the new Samsung Galaxy Note9, Apple iPhone XS or Google Pixel 2 will give you everything you could possibly need to keep your social life on track. All of them are state-of-the-art smartphones, with long battery life, impressive cameras, superfast performance and plenty of storage.

More budget-friendly devices include the Samsung Galaxy J6 and Nokia 7 Plus, which still offer plenty of the same great features, like a large screen that’s useful for taking notes and browsing the web. With a similar sleek and stylish look, they offer good battery life and a great camera.

If value-for-money is key, the Hawk from EE is a great option. It’s a powerful smartphone with stunning Gorilla Glass casing, a 5-inch HD screen and secure NFC payment features. It also comes with a pair of JBL headphones with JBL signature sound, perfect for listening to music on your way to and from lectures.

Whatever handset you go for we know it’ll make a dent in your pocket, so we’ve teamed up with UNIDAYS to offer UK university students 20% off a range of handset and SIM Only plans.

Whether you’re new to EE or not, as a bonus we’ll also give you six months of free access to Apple Music when you take out a Pay Monthly mobile plan. Stream and download all your favourite tracks, and don’t worry about the data because it’s on us!

Tablets perfect for your study needs

It’s probably not just a new smartphone you’ll be needing. How about a tablet too? After all, even the largest of smartphones are just a bit too small to write an essay on, and laptops can be bulky and heavy to lug around.

Take a look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 or the iPad Pro, both of which are great for taking notes, doing online research and pretty much everything else. Or try the Samsung Galaxy Tab A for a smaller option with good battery life. If you're an existing EE customer, you'll save 10% on a tablet plan and up to £49.99 off the upfront cost when taking an additional line.

Accessories to complement your student life

A good pair of headphones is essential, but there are so many variations around nowadays it can be hard knowing which to choose.

If you love sports and getting out and about you can’t go wrong with Beats Powerbeats 3 wireless headphones that fit neatly around your ear and have a 12-hour battery life. They have amazing sound, and if you’re an EE pay monthly customer you can spread the cost over 11 months courtesy of our add to plan option. Alternatively, for some more budget-friendly wireless options that you can keep in your bag ready for the commute, take a look at the ranges by KitSound or Jabra.

Other essential equipment you'll need includes wireless chargers, protective cases and extra cables. You can find loads of choice and some great deals in our online accessories shop.

Extra data so you don’t run out

When you sign up to a plan with the UNIDAYS offer, you’ll also receive an additional 500MB of data each month on top of your plan allowance. Which means you're less likely to run out of data at the end of the month; you can just carry on browsing, downloading and Facebooking with your extra MB.

And don’t forget to ask your parents to set up data gifting before you leave home by adding you to their account. It means that if you do happen to splurge every last little bit of your data (it’s easily done), you can ask your parents to transfer over some of theirs.

Getting online at home

If you’re going to be house-sharing or renting a place on your own, we’re sure you’ll want to have a reliable home broadband connection. Unlimited EE broadband starts from just £19.50 a month, including line rental, and you can add on EE TV too for an extra £8 a month.
