What is FTTP broadband?
24 March 2021

FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) or Full Fibre broadband is the latest in superfast broadband technology, offering game-changing speeds of up to 900Mb/s. We explain how it works and why it's set to transform your home internet connection.

You’re probably already familiar with fibre broadband, the high-speed alternative to copper cable broadband which has become the norm in recent years. Traditionally, fibre optic cables have run from your provider’s broadband exchange to the green cabinet in your street, which is then connected to your home with regular copper wires. This is called Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC). It’s pretty fast, with average speeds varying between 30-70Mb/s. But with our internet dependency greater than ever, you may find yourself needing even faster speeds to support the demands of a fully connected household. Here’s where FTTP broadband comes in.

How does FTTP broadband work?
The clue’s in the name! With Fibre to the Premises broadband, fibre optic cables run all the way to your premises, whether it's a house, apartment building or office. In contrast to FTTC broadband, there are no copper wires slowing you down, and no sharing with the neighbours. You don’t even need a landline.

How fast is FTTP broadband?
Boasting speeds of up to 900Mb/s, and with the potential to deliver even faster speeds in the future, FTTP broadband is a genuine game-changer. For context, that's up to 25 times faster than traditional fibre broadband, with up to 10 times faster upload speeds.

Do I need FTTP broadband?
FTTP broadband is great for families who often have several people competing for bandwidth at the same time, as well as households with lots of connected devices such as smart products, set-top boxes and games consoles. Into your gaming? You'll enjoy all the speed you need for online gaming on 4K TV, without the worry. And whether you're in an important online work meeting or just catching up with friends over Zoom, you can enjoy video calls with a clear, precise quality.

Can I get FTTP broadband?
Right now, FTTP technology is only available to certain homes. As of February 2021, the FTTP network covered just over 4 million UK premises, with this figure set to rise to 5.8 million by September. Find out if your area is covered.
