Will 5G work on my phone?

Updated 27 March 2020 (First published 22 February 2019)

5G is about giving you the best mobile experience you’ve ever had. It’s an additional layer of our network. It doesn’t replace 4G or WiFi – it adds to them. But you need a 5G-capable phone, and a 5G plan, to enjoy its benefits.

There's a great range of 5G phones available from manufacturers including Samsung, OnePlus, Oppo and LG.

Where can I get 5G signal?

We're rolling out 5G across the UK, starting with the busiest towns and cities, where it can make the biggest difference to the most people.

We've already reached 71 locations. Our 5G cities include London, Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow. While among our towns are Solihull, Nottingham, Huddersfield, and Castlereagh.

Is it worth getting a 5G phone before 5G is available in my area?

The latest 5G phones have some pretty cool features. The Samsung Galaxy Fold 5G is the world's first foldable phone.

The OnePlus 7 Pro 5G has a clever pop-up selfie camera. The Oppo Reno 5G is built for gaming, with true-to-life vibration and tactile feedback.

But perhaps the best reason to get a 5G phone if you're not in a 5G area is future proofing. While 5G might not be available where you live right now, we're bringing 5G to new towns and cities all the time. So there's a good chance that you'll be able to get 5G before your two-year phone plan is up.

And remember, if you don't live in a 5G area, but commute into one of our 5G cities or towns, getting a 5G phone is a great way to avoid buffering in busy places like train stations - no more boring journeys for you.

We're not forgetting 4G

Our aim is to build one smart network. As well as building 5G, we’ll continue to roll out 4G in more and more previously unconnected parts of the UK to keep you connected wherever you are.
